Description:

English copper halfpenny, 1905

Diameter 25mm

The obverse features the bust of Edward VII facing right. The inscription reads 'EDWARDUS VII DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP', Latin, abbreviated meaning 'Edward VII By the Grace of God King of All the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India'. Below the bust are the intials 'De S' for G. W. de Saulles, the designer. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing right. Beside her is a shield bearing the Union Jack, on which she rests her right hand. Britannia is seated on rocks by the sea and holds Poseidon's trident in her left hand. The date is below and the inscription flanking the central image reads 'HALF PENNY'.
