Description:

English copper farthing, first issue, 1821

Diameter 21mm

The obverse features the draped laureate bust of George IV facing left. The inscription reads 'GEORGIUS IIII DEI GRATIA', Latin, 'George IV By the Grace of God'. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing right. She has a shield at her side with the Union Jack on it representing the union of England, Ireland and Scotland. Britannia holds an olive branch in her right hand, which is lowered towards the shield, and Poseidon's trident in her left. The inscription reads 'BRITANNIAR:REX FID:DEF: 1821', Latin, abbreviated meaning 'King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith'.
