English copper penny, 1826


Diameter 33mm


The obverse features the laureate bust of George IV and the inscription 'GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA.1826', Latin for 'George IV By the Grace of God', although this is barely legible. The reverse features Britannia seated with a shield at her side and a trident in her left hand. Underneath is the rose of England flanked by the shamrock of Ireland and the thistle of Scotland. The inscription reads 'BRITANNIA:REX FID:DEF', Latin, abbreviated meaning 'King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith', although this is also barely legible.
