English bronze medal, c.1739


Diameter 40mm


Medal struck to celebrate the British victory over the Spanish at Porto Bello, Panama, an important silver-exporting port. The obverse features a portrait of Admiral Edward Vernon and the inscription 'ADMIRAL VERNON TOOK PORTO BELLO'. The reverse features six British ships entering the Port between two stone forts with the date, 'Nov 22 1739', underneath and the inscription 'WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY'.
