English copper Farthing, 1822

Diameter 22mm


The obverse features the laureate and draped bust of George IV facing left and the abbreviated Latin inscription 'GEORGIUS IIII DEI GRATIA', meaning 'George IV By the Grace of God'. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing right. She holds a trident in her left hand and her right hand, holding an olive branch, rests on a shield, at her side. The shield bears the Union Flag. Just visible to the right is the head of a lion that is lying next to Britannia, with its head on its forepaws. The abbreviated Latin inscription reads 'BRITANNIAR: REX FID: DEF', for 'King of Britain, Defender of the Faith', and the date is below.
