Medal struck to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Robert Burns. The obverse features the bust of Robert Burns with the inscription 'ROBERT BURNS CHIEF OF SCOTTISH POETS' around the top and 'BORN 25 JANUARY 1759/ DIED 21 JANUARY 1796' around the base. The reverse features the inscription 'TO/ COMMEMORATE/ THE CENTENARY/ OF THE BIRTH OF/ ROBERT BURNS/ 25 JANUARY/ 1859' within a wreath of thistles. Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist who is widely regarded as the leading Scottish poet and the national poet of Scotland.
