Description:This beaded girdle was worn by the people of Basutoland, South Africa. It is made of four thick strands of black and pink glass beads, and decorated with panels of green, white and black beads.
Within South African culture beadwork ornaments were made by the women, and worn by both men and women. Amongst the Zulu people different coloured beads symbolised different meanings, for example yellow represented fertility, and green represented new life.
