Description:Interesting provenance label on the lid of the lace box. This refers to the sale by the estate of Mrs Charles Lee Lewes at Sotheby's 27 June 1923. [see Painting of Dante for another item from this sale]. This wooden box was used to store lace by local author George Eliot. In common with many Victorian ladies George Eliot adorned her clothing with lace. George Eliot (born Mary Ann Evans) was a local authoress based in the Coventry and Nuneaton district, from 1819-1880.
