Description:Barcheston Parish Register showing burial entry for Richard Hyckes. He set up the looms at Barcheston[which continued] under the patronage of [the founder's son] Ralph Sheldon with the assistance of Peter the Dutchman. 'Richard Hyckes died the [last day] of October and was buried the seconde of November anno domini 1621. Aged 97 or therabouts.' [William Sheldon (c.1500-1570) allowed Richard Hyckes, almost certainly a Flemish emigre, use of the manor house at Barcheston rent-free provided he organized the weaving of tapestry, arras, moccadoes, carolles, plometts, grograynes, sayes and sarges. The first two are luxury furnishing items, the others a range of cloth fabrics. Sheldon's attempt to introduce weaving techniques better known to Flemings than to Englishmen suggests he was trying to foster a new industry in an impoverished area.]
