Description:The Tower of London in Shakespeare's time.

The fortress on the banks of the tidal river Thames was a royal palace, and a prison stronghold. It also housed the royal armoury and a public menagerie. Shakespeare set scenes there in his history plays, including Richard III where the royal princes George of Clarence, Edward Prince of Wales and his brother, Richard of York, were all murdered.

See: Richard III, 4,2, lines 72-85 and 4,3, lines 1-22.
