Description:Southwark: a place for entertainment in Shakespeare's time. The southbank of the river Thames in London was reached from the city only by boat, or across London Bridge. This area, called Southwark, was beyond the city's jurisdiction. Here lay the theatres: The Hope, The Rose, The Globe and The Swan, as well as the bear-baiting arenas, public alehouses and other houses of entertainment.
