Courtiers of James I were familiar with travelers returning from the new found lands of North and South America, including Sir Walter Raleigh's ill-fated trips to Guiana, and beyond, in 1595 and 1617. In The Comedy of Errors 'America, the Indies' is described as full of wealth 'rubies, carbuncles, sapphires ' (3,2, lines 136-141).
