Description:An ornamented binding on a large ‘folio’ volume of Shakespeare's time.

This copy of the enlarged edition of Holinshed's Chronicles has its original leather binding which covers heavy wooden boards, but the spine is a twentieth century replacement. The boards still have their decorative metal bosses, and signs of the clasps which would have helped to keep the volume firm if standing, probably with its fore-edge, rather than the spine, facing out on a shelf in its owner’s library.
