Description:An owner’s family notes in their Bible from Shakespeare's time. This Bible has notes by a number of former owners whose signatures appear on the title-page. On the flyleaf a late Victorian owner has written about the edition of the 'Geneva' Bible text, beginning: "This is the Geneva Bible first printed in that text in 1560 " Other owners have recorded family births and deaths on later blank pages in the volume. This was a not un-common practice, especially in the late eighteenth century. Notes by former owners: On the reverse of the front flyleaf the note reads: This is the Geneva Bible first printed in that town in 1560. Bishop Coverdale, Antony Gilby & William Whittingham had chief concern in the work. Geddes prefers it to James's translation, now in which see Newcome's Historical View , p. 68-77. He gives extracts not from the Epistle to St. John but from that to our 'beloved in the Lord'. This is printed in Italian at the end of the above. This he calls the Preface. See Newcome's catalogue p.395 where this edition is mentioned. Full title: The Bible. That is, the holy scriptures contained in the olde and newe testament... translated... . Christopher Barker, 1576.[Geneva version].
