Description:The Bible in English: known by Shakespeare. The Shakespeare family, like all their Elizabethan contemporaries were required by law to attend their parish church for worship every Sunday. At Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon William Shakespeare heard readings from the English translations of the Bible. This was probably the ‘Bishops’ Bible published in 1568. The ‘Geneva’ version, of which a title-page is seen here, was frequently owned by devout families for private use at home. The Bible title page reads: [modernised spelling] THE BIBLE, that is the Holy Scriptures contained in the old and new Testament. Translated according to the Hebrew and Greek, and compared with the best translations in diverse languages. With most profitable annotations upon all the hard places, and other things of great importance as may appear in the Epistle to the Reader. Fear ye not, stand still and behold the salvation of the Lord, which he will show you this day. Exodus. 14.13. [and around the printer's device woodcut of an army and chariots before a camp.
