Date:1576
Description:A family Bible from Shakespeare's time, in a repaired later binding. Many of Shakespeare’s contemporaries, especially devout Protestants would have owned a so-called ‘Geneva’ edition of the Bible such as this. The binding on this copy has been repaired, or replaced in the eighteenth century and the volume bears a library shelf-mark from an unidentified former owner on its spine. This English language text had originally been published in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1560, by English Protestants who had fled from Queen Mary Tudor's revival of Roman Catholic rule in England. Full title: The Bible. That is, the holy scriptures contained in the olde and newe testament... translated.... Christopher Barker, 1576.[Geneva version].
