William Shakespeare knew this series of stories about miraculous transformations, written by the Roman poet Ovid well as they formed an important part of regular study at grammar school. Arthur Golding's 1567 translation of the Metamorphosis from Latin gave Shakespeare many ideas for his plays and poems.
