Date:1596

Description:A much-used book, possibly owned by Shakespeare.

This prayer book, whose dimensions are only three by four inches [9 x 12 cm], is much battered by heavy use from previous owners. The spine leather has cracked and fallen away, but in doing so it shows the way an Elizabethan binder sewed the ‘gatherings’ of folded sheets together before the leather was added to cover the boards and spine in one piece.

Full title: The booke of Common Prayer. London, Deputies of Christopher Barker, 1596. Bound with, The whole booke of psalms, 1594.
