Description:The care of hawks: a familiar occupation for Shakespeare. Falconry was not only a sport of the nobility. In Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor Master Page invites his friends to early morning 'birding’ in Windsor park. ‘after [breakfast] we’ll a-birding together; I have a fine hawk for the bush.’ (3,3, lines 221-222). Latham’s handbook was an important guide for learning the skills of the sport. Full title: Simon Latham, Latham's falconry, or the faulcons lure, and cure: in two bookes. The first, concerning the ordering and training up of all hawkes in generall; especially the haggard faulcon gentle. The second, teaching approved medicines for the cure of all diseases in them.
