Description:Shakespeare’s major sourcebook for the history plays. Raphael (or Ralph) Holinshed began his career in London as a translator and worked on a history of the world of which the sections on England Scotland and Ireland were completed with the aid of notes inherited from John Leland, librarian and antiquary to King Henry VIII. This became the first volume of the Chronicles (1577). Holinshed’ s revised work, published in 1587, became Shakespeare’s main source for knowledge of English history. Full title: Raphael Holinshed, The firste [laste] volume of chronicles of England, Scotlande and Irelande. Conteyning the description and chronicles of England from the first inhabiting unto the conquest; the description and chronicles of Scotland from the first originall of the Scotts nation, till the yeare of our Lorde 1571; The description and chronicles of Yrelande likewise from the firste originall of that nation untill the yeare 1547.
