Description:Shakespeare's heroine, Viola, is shipwrecked in Illyria, a province in Ortelius’s atlas. Illyria, ruled over by Duke Orsino in Twelfth Night, is the European state, now known as Croatia. ‘What country friends is this? asks Viola as she comes ashore on the Dalmatian coast. ‘This is Illyria, Lady,’ the sea captain replies.
