Description:Shakespeare’s England. The pocket atlas of Ortelius was a useful handbook for all Elizabethans or Jacobeans who chose to travel, especially to Europe, either in person, or in their dreams of places far from home. As the map of England clearly shows the maps did not recognise the modern convention of north at the top of a page. The main ports (Dover, Rye, [South]Hampton, Plymouth) from which Shakespeare’s contemporaries set sail are clearly marked, as well as the tidal river Thames (Tamesis) leading to the port of London. Warwickshire, the county where Shakespeare was born is not marked. Full title: Abraham Ortelius his epitome of the theatre of the worlde. Now latlye renewed and augmented. The mappes all newe grauen by Michael Coignet. London, printed for Ieames Shawe, 1603.
