Description:Printer's border ornament with bear and ragged staff, symbol of Shakespeare's county. The chained bear and its ragged staff were part of the emblem of the earls of Warwick, and remain to this day, the symbol of the county of Warwickshire in which Shakespeare was born. How the emblem comes to be used as an ornamental woodcut in Day's Book of prayers is not known. Full title: Richard Day, A Booke of Christian Prayers collected out of the auncient writers and best learned in our tyme, worthy to be read with earnest mynde of all Christians in these daungerous and troublesome dayes', London, John Daye, 1581.
