Description:Personal confessions: available to Shakespeare's contemporaries. Richard Day’s book of prayers was a very popular book owned by many of Shakespeare’s contemporaries. The prayers printed are intended for daily personal use. The top prayer on this page reads: Thou hast chastised me O Lord and I am broken as an untamed young bullock. Turn me so I shall be turned for thou art the Lord my God: for when thou hadst once turned me, I amended and when thou hadst shewed me my faults, I struck my thigh. I was ashamed and blushed, because I abhorred the reproach of my youth. The motto above the image of a saint holding a sacred heart, who stands on broken cups, altar candles and other holy vessels, is: Love of God is in spirit and truth, While below it reads: Idolatry is spiritual adultery.
