Description:This form of puzzle, now known as a jigsaw, was originally called a dissected puzzle. The printed picture was applied to a thin sheet of wood, which was then dissected, or cut up, into pieces. It was kept in a wooden box with a sliding lid. This puzzle is called 'Mamma's Apple Pie'. When made up, it shows how an apple pie is made - from picking the apples to serving up the pie for dinner. Dissected puzzles often had an educational theme. Children were expected to learn as they played! Mid 19th century Box lid - 156mm x 202mm
