Description:Front cover of 'The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper,' from 16 February 1895.
The illustration shows the lavish costume ball, Bal Poudre, hosted that year by the Countess of Warwick, Frances Evelyn Brooke. As a well-known member of high society, her events attracted many famous faces from the British aristocracy and beyond.
Bal Poudre means literally 'Powdered Ball' - this was a lavish recreation of a ball at the French Court in the 18th century, when the fashion for powdered wigs was high fashion.
