Description:A letter sent by George Henry Waller to his father, Thomas Wathen Waller, in which he describes life in the Crimea where he is serving as a young officer.
He mentions his duties and being under fire, but not in a regular engagement. He also describes the general living conditions, the snow and living in a tent with his pillow wet through because water has been dripping onto it. In a postscript he recommends that others coming out to the Crimea have good, long waterproof boots.
The letter has been cross-hatched, a techique involving turning the paper and writing down, as well as across, the page. It saved money as it meant that less paper was used but it could make letters difficult to read.
