Date:1962

Description:

This long service medal was awarded to a Women's Voluntary Service member who had completed 40 duties a year for 15 years. The medal is attached to a green, red and white ribbon that has another long service medal on it. On the obverse is the W.V.S. cypher surrounded by ivy, which was used because it is a symbol of steadfastness. The reverse features the W. V. S. motto, "SERVICE BEYOND SELF", and a motif of rosemary. Rosemary was considered a women's herb as it was used in decoration, cooking and cosmetics, and it also represents rememberance and friendship. The medal was produced at the Royal Mint in 1962.
