Uruguayan bronze four centesimos, 1869


Diameter 35mm


The obverse features the national emblem of Uruguay, the Sol de Mayo (Sun of May), which refers to the May Revolution of 1810 that led to independence from Spanish rule. The Sol de Mayo has sixteen rays of alternate sizes and a face in the centre. The inscription around the outside reads 'REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' and the date is below. The reverse features '4' within a central ring. There is a banner above bearing the word 'centesimos'. These are surrounded by a wreath and at the base is the mintmark for Birmingham, 'H'.
