Description:

United States of America silver dime, 1859

Diameter 17.5mm

The obverse features the denomination with the mintmark for San Franciso, 'S', underneath, within a wreath. Around the outside is the inscription 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'. The reverse features Christian Gobrecht's 'Seated Liberty' design. Liberty is seated, positioned to face right but looking back over her right shoulder, her right hand rests on a striped shield by her side which bears a banner with the word 'LIBERTY' on it. In her left hand she holds a staff surmounted by the Phrygian, also known as liberty, cap. Around the outside are thirteen six-pointed stars representing the thirteen original Anglo-American colonies and the date is below.
