The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's 'Braided Hair' Liberty design, the bust of Liberty is shown facing left and wearing a coronet that bears the word 'Liberty'. She is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars representing the original thirteen Anglo-American colonies and the date is below. The reverse features the denomination within a wreath and the inscription 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' around the outside.
