Description:

English silver crown, c.1675

Diameter 38mm

The obverse features the laureate bust of King Charles II facing right. The inscription reads 'CAROLUS II DEI GRATIA', Latin for 'Charles II By the Grace of God'. The reverse features four shields topped by four crowns and surrounding the Garter Star. The top shield bears the three lions of England, the right hand shield the single lion rampant of Scotland, the bottom shield bears the three fleur-de-lys of France and the left the harp of Ireland. There are four sets of interlocking 'Cs' in the angles. The inscription reads 'MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX', Latin, abbreviated meaning 'King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'. The date at the top is partially obscured by wear on this example.
