Description:

English silver florin, Jubilee Coinage, 1887

Diameter 27mm

The obverse features the diademed bust of Queen Victoria facing left. The inscription reads 'VICTORIA DEI GRATIA', Latin for 'Victoria By the Grace of God'. In the bottom right, under the bust, are the intials J.E.B for Joseph Boehm, the designer/engraver. The reverse features cruciform shields. Two contain the three lions of England, one the harp of Ireland and one the single lion rampant of Scotland. Each shield has a crown above and they surround the Garter Star. Between each shield are sceptres, two with an orb above for England, one with a thistle above for Scotland, and one with a harp above for Ireland. The inscription reads BRIT: REG: FID: DEF:, Latin, abbreviated meaning 'Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith'.
