English copper farthing, 1836


Diameter 21mm


The obverse features the bust of William IV facing right and the inscription 'GULIELMUS IIII DEI GRATIA 1836', Latin for, 'William IV By the Grace of God'. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing right with a shield at her side and a trident in her left hand. Below is the rose of England flanked by the thistle of Scotland and the shamrock of Ireland. The inscription reads 'BRITANNIAR: REX FID: DEF', Latin, abbreviated and following on from obverse inscription, 'King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith'.
