Description:Barcheston Parish Register showing burial entry for Richard Hyckes. He set up the looms at Barcheston under the patronage of Ralph Sheldon with the assistance of Peter the Dutchman. 'Richard Hyckes died the [last day] of October and was buried the seconde of November anno domini 1621. Aged 97 or therabouts.' [William Sheldon (c.1500 - 70) allowed Richard Hyckes, almost certainly a Flemish emigre, use of the manor house at Barcheston, rent-free provided he organized the weaving of tapestry, arras, moccadoes, carolles, plometts, grograynes, sayes and sarges. The first two are luxury furnishing items, the others a range of cloth fabrics. Sheldon's attempt to introduce weaving techniques better known to Flemings than to Englishmen suggests he was trying to foster a new industry in an impoverished area.]
