Date:1572 - 1580 (c.)

Description:An alderman and his servant in Shakespeare's London.

The Londoner's fashionable gown with hanging sleeves is 'guarded' [edged] with fur. His servant carries a sword and buckler as a sign that he will protect his master. Elizabethan servants commonly wore blue, while reds, and darker green were worn by all classes. Black was the most expensive dyed cloth, usually worn only by the nobility with their silks and velvet. Black woollen gowns symbolized constancy and also denoted those of a puritanical persuasion.
