Description:Southwark: site of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. When Shakespeare arrived in London, aged about eighteen, he found work, possibly as a tender of horses outside a playhouse known as The Theatre in the north of the city. By 1598 he was one of five sharers in the actors' company which moved the timbers of the original Theatre across the river to be re-built as The Globe in Southwark.
