Date:1800 - 1864 (c.)

Description:This portrait in was once owned by Thomas Turton, Bishop of Ely, (1780-1864). Following the Bishop's death it was sold and then donated by its purchaser to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in 1864.

Its obvious similarities to the Droeshout engraving led to speculation that it had been used as the model for that portrait. Evidence for this hypothesis is lacking, however.

Height 51 cm; width 39.6 cm (frame). Oils on oak panel; inscribed 'Aet.suae 39x1603' on top left hand side; framed in old Dutch style.

Probably nineteenth-century

By an unknown artist

Identity number SBT 1993-31/537
