Description:This is a tole peintre [painted sheet metal] apothecary's sign shaped as a large pestle and mortar, with a detachable base. It was possibly made for interior display - it is unlikely to have been placed outside as the top of mortar bowl is concave, and would have collected rainwater. It comes from Northern Europe and dates from the 18th or 19th century. Height 805mm (not including base), Width 617mm
