Description:This is a mixed media work by an unknown artist dating from about 1840. It depicts an earth stopper who stops us a fox's earth the evening before a hunt, confronted by a sweep. A cutting stuck on the reverse tells the story of the picture, 'The above gentle Swain is supposed to be on his way home, when by a sudden turn of the Lane he is brought plump upon what he conceives to be nothing more or less than the D***l, but which in fact is a simple Sweep and his Donkey'. Framed size Height 360mm, Width 480mm. Depth 48mm.
