Description:This is a watercolour of an important archaeological excavation at Kirkdale Cave in Yorkshire. It is by an artist of the English School and dates from about 1824. On the reverse an inscription reads 'The Reverend Joseph Smyth, Professor Auckland, Frank Auckland's father, about 1824'. However, Auckland should be Buckland, as Professor William Buckland was a professor in geology at Oxford in 1819.

The specimens found in the cave and more information about Buckland can be seen at Oxford University Museum.
