Description:The Manor House, Clifton upon Dunsmore. This Manor House was said to have been built well over 250 years ago. It has 30-40 rooms and overlooks seven acres of parkland. In 1665 Thomas Whitney conveyed the Manor to John Bridgeman, in whose family it remained until 1790, when Sir Henry Bridgeman sold it to John Townsend, whose grandson, Thomas Sutton Townsend held it until his death in 1918, when it passed to his daughter Mary Frances, wife of Edward Gawne Roscoe, who held it until 1955 when she left the district. On 14th March 1955 the Clifton Manor estate was bought for £15,500 by Mr T.P. Walters of Manor Farm, Clifton. In June 1956 the Manor House was bought by the Earl and Countess of March. Preserved in the grounds at one time was an old cross that originally stood in the village centre, but now it is said that it rests in the churchyard. Leicester Evening Mail cutting, 15 June 1956. The history of the Manor previous to 1665 can be seen in the Victoria County History of Warwickshire, Vol. 6, page 66. 1930s
