Description:Randolph Turpin
2001

Randolph Turpin was born in Leamington Spa in 1928. With his brothers he took up boxing, and was managed by George Middleton. On the 10th July 1951 Turpin defeated Sugar Ray Robinson to win the World Middleweight Boxing Championship. His victory was celebrated in his home town of Leamington Spa, and crowds of people came to see him at the Town Hall.

The Randolph Turpin Memorial Fund raised money for a statue of Randolph. The statue in Warwick town centre was unveiled on the 50th anniversary of Randolph’s victory, on Tuesday 10 July 2001.

This statue is a miniature replica of the full sized original. It is one of 10 produced by the sculptor Carl Payne.
