Description:A letter sent by Anna Jarrett to her brother Thomas, a diplomat with the British Legation in Brussels. Anna has just become a mother for the first time, after fourteen years of marriage, and is writing to thank Thomas for his letter of warm congratulations and to describe her own feelings on motherhood. She is thankful to have survived childbirth and can scarcely believe she has at last become a mother. She also mentions her husband John's delight with the baby, though she feels he is a little disappointed that it is not a boy.
