Description:A letter written by Miss Margaret Wear whilst nursing in the Crimea and sent to Lady Catherine Waller. The letter, sent from Balaklava, contains news of Lady Waller's son, Lieutenant George Henry Waller, who has recently been injured.

The letter has been cross-hatched, a technique involving turning the letter around and writing across, as well as down, the page. Cross-hatching was a way of using less paper when writing letters and therefore of saving money but it could make them difficult to read.
