Description:
English imitation guinea, brass token, 1790
Diameter 20mm
The obverse features the laureate bust of George III facing right. The inscription reads 'Georgious III Dei Gratia'. Both image and inscription on the obverse of the coin are identical to a genuine gold guinea. The reverse features the coat of arms of the British-Hanoverian monarchy on a spade shaped shield with a crown above. Again, this is identical to a genuine gold guinea. However, the inscription around the outside reads 'N.C.R ET CO DG L.T. REX FD. B.I.R.M. These letters probably refer to the maker of the token, the letter 'BIRM' suggests it was made in Birmingham.
The 'spade' guinea was extensively copied in the 18th Century and imitations such as this one were often used for advertising purposes or as counters for gambling.
