The Last Supper: Beans and Chips, 1999

Screenprint on paper

1680mm x 1170mm

Purchased with support of the Wellcome Trust & MLA/V&A purchase grant fund in 2002

This print is from Hirst’s The Last Supper, a series of 13 prints which uses the graphics of pharmaceutical drug packaging to raise questions about our attitudes to food and pharmaceutical medicine and to the complex relationship between everyday life and religion. The Last Supper can be interpreted as Christ’s own last meal with his 12 disciples, which is re-enacted at mass each Sunday with the receiving of Holy Communion, or it can be seen more specifically as a reference to the last sacrament received by the dying and the medicine often taken in the last stages of life. This series also has strong visual references to 1960s Pop Art, particularly Andy Warhol’s prints of food and domestic products. Significantly, one of Andy Warhol’s last paintings was a monumental version of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.
