Description:Peter Blake (born 1932)

'And To Show You I'm Not Proud You May Shake Hands with Me!', 1970

Ink on paper silk screen print

240mm x 180mm

Donated by Dr Ursula Hoff, 1984, to the Contemporary Art Society who presented it to the Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum 1986

Humpty Dumpty makes a brief appearance in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. This print is one of eight illustrations to the novel produced by Blake, a pioneer of Pop Art. The series was completed in 1970. In 1975, Blake founded the Brotherhood of Ruralists with the artists Graham and Annie Ovenden. The group were particularly interested in exploring the concepts of childhood and its depiction in art, often using images of the fictional Alice as a motif.
