The English landscape became a preoccupation for artists in the period directly after the end of the First World War in 1918. Nash had been working as a war artist, and this painting is a celebration of nature’s restorative qualities within the landscape. The trees are plump and recall the fertile landscapes of the romantic, visionary artist Samuel Palmer. However, the style is distinctly modernist, with abstracted forms and the rain depicted in long vertical lines. These lines create the impression of a grid and, with the small picket fence running along the base of the picture, appear to enclose and cut off the beautiful garden from the viewer.
