Description:

Adam Willaerts

The Landing of the Pilgrims, 1623

Oil on panel

345mm x 560mm

A coastal scene with a building on a rocky outcrop to the far left, and travellers climbing the stairs towards the open doorway in which a woman is waiting. A man in a cloak with a long staff is standing in the foreground in the far left corner, looking towards the left; he may have been conversing with another figure who has been lost, as the panel was cut back on this side. Near the coast is a sailing ship, from which the travellers have obviously just embarked, and a small rowing boat by its side.

Until 1998 this painting was attributed to Adam Willaerts, it was then attributed to Abraham, his son, until 2003. Adam Willaerts (Willarts) was born in Antwerp, but moved to Utrecht in the early 1600s. He specialized in marine painting, as did his son Abraham whom he trained. Confusion has often been caused by the similarity of their styles and signatures.
